Finding myself at death’s door one day wasn’t fun.
Seven weeks totally paralysed in Intensive Care, kept alive by drugs and machines, wasn’t what I ordered. A further two months in a rehabilitation facility to again learn how to stand, walk, and generally care for me, wasn’t in my life’s plans either.
You could say Guillain Barre Syndrome changed my life.
But I was one of the fortunate people who get a return ticket. I grabbed that baby with both hands, ran and have never looked back. Every morning I see the scar on my throat from my tracheostomy - required to keep me alive during that horrid time - and every morning I’m reminded of my own strength and resilience, and my opportunity to give back.
Ain’t nothin’ gonna hold me down - I was determined to pick myself up, dust myself off, and get back on with life and do what made my heart sing.
